Review: The Tale of Liril

"The Tale of Liril"
by Kevis Hendrickson

{ I received a free copy of this ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review. }

Liril wants to find a special present for her Papa's birthday, but without much money, what could she get? She meets an old woman who offers her a magic bean, but Liril must venture into the dangerous Black Forest and return the woman's missing locket first. On her quest to find the locket, Liril faces monsters, wolves, a mysterious orchard, and an enchanted mirror. When she finally finds her way back out of the forest, her adventure is only beginning, for Liril has discovered the locket is magical, and she wonders if it might be of some use to her before she returns it...

This is a beautiful fairy tale told in a classic structure and style. Liril is an endearing character who shows great bravery while traveling alone in the Black Forest, struggles with the temptation of using the magic locket for herself, and learns a timeless lesson: be careful what you wish for. Her quest is narrated in a way that brings the reader right into the story, while leaving plenty of room for the reader's imagination to envision the wondrous things she encounters.

This story is just the right length for bedtime, and it has a timeless writing style that begs to be read aloud to little ears. Liril's adventures will certainly enthrall children, as well as any adult who enjoys a nicely paced story rich with magic and fantasy.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 stars
